Ever wondered who the ladies backstage are? Or why there are so few women working backstage? Well, wait.... The metal stage is actually doing pretty well when it comes to a more diverse backstage! How come? What are they doing differently than all the others? Come and hear Malle Kaas, Sound engineer and co-founder of Women In Live Music, give her take on why that is so.
Nevertheless, Women still only make up a few percent backstage in the touring world. But is it important to have more diversity backstage? Isn't it just better to leave things as they are?
Malle Kaas (DK)
Malle Kaas is based in Copenhagen (DK), and is the CEO of Women In Live Music (WILM). Malle has worked as a sound engineer in the live event industry for over 2 decades in Denmark and internationally for bands, festivals, venues, and rental companies.
In 2018, she co-founded WILM together with Hannah Brodrick. WILM is a European organisation with a focus on people working backstage.
Malle also finds time to freelance as a certified nurse anaesthetist around the Scandinavian countries
Women In Live Music (WILM) is a European organisation for women and like-minded peers working backstage in Production, Logistics and Technic. The organisation was founded in December 2017 and consists of more than 8.000 members. The agenda for WILM is to increase diversity backstage through visibility, networking and optimization of working skills. Members of the WILM community include Sound Engineers, Tour Managers, Lighting Designers, Riggers, Backliners, Stage Managers, Stagehands, Truck Drivers, Concert photographers and more
